Synonyms: ■ Recurrent oral aphthae ■ Aphthous ulcers ■ Canker sores ■ Simple or complex aphthosis

Key features

• The three forms of simple recurrent aphthous stomatitis are minor, major and herpetiform 

• Lesions are painful, typically less than 5 mm in diameter, round to oval, and appear creamy-white with an erythematous halo 

• The pathomechanism is unknown, but immunologic factors may be involved 

• Usually controlled through the use of topical corticosteroids
